Tennis Serve Percentage Calculator
Tennis serve statistics are tracked using three key metrics: first-serve in percentage (how often the first serve lands in), first-serve points won (how often the server wins the point when the first serve is in), and second-serve points won (how often the server wins the point on a second serve). Together these metrics capture both the aggressiveness and effectiveness of a player's serve. Enter your serving statistics from a match or tournament to calculate all three.
Tennis serving statistics formulas
1st Serve In% = (1st Serves In / 1st Serve Attempts) × 100
1st Serve Pts Won% = (Pts Won on 1st Serve / 1st Serves In) × 100
2nd Serve Pts Won% = (Pts Won on 2nd Serve / 2nd Serve Points) × 100
These are the standard statistics tracked by the ATP and WTA tours for every professional match. They are calculated per service game and aggregated across the match.
Serving statistics benchmarks (ATP/WTA Tour)
- 1st Serve In% above 65%: Good consistency; fewer double faults.
- 1st Serve Pts Won% above 75%: Dominant server on tour.
- 2nd Serve Pts Won% above 55%: Strong second serve; limits break chances.
- 2nd Serve Pts Won% below 45%: Vulnerable second serve; opponents will target it.
Tennis serve percentage: frequently asked questions
What is first-serve percentage in tennis?
First-serve percentage (1st Srv%) measures how often a player lands their first serve in the correct service box. It is calculated as first serves in / total first serve attempts x 100. Tour averages are typically 60% to 65% for men and women.
What is first-serve points won?
First-serve points won (1st Srv pts won%) measures the percentage of points won when the first serve is successfully placed in. Powerful servers typically win 75% to 80% of first-serve points on tour, while average servers are around 70%.
What is second-serve points won?
Second-serve points won (2nd Srv pts won%) measures the percentage of points won when the server relies on their second serve. This is lower than first-serve points won because second serves are hit with less pace and more spin to ensure they land in. Tour averages are around 50% to 55%.
What is a good serve percentage in tennis?
A first-serve in percentage above 65% combined with a first-serve win rate above 75% represents strong serving. The double-fault rate (second serve misses) should be below 5% of total service points to avoid giving away free points.
How is overall service hold percentage calculated?
Service hold percentage is the fraction of service games held (not broken). It is calculated from the combined first-serve and second-serve performance across all service games. Hold rates on tour are typically 80% or higher for strong servers.
