Tip Income Tax Calculator
Tips received by employees in industries such as restaurants, hotels, and ride-sharing are considered taxable income under IRS rules. They are subject to both federal income tax and FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare). When tips are reported to your employer, they are included on your W-2 and FICA is withheld from your regular wages to cover them. This calculator estimates your annual tax on tip income by combining tips with base wages, applying FICA on the combined amount (up to the SS wage base), and calculating federal income tax using the 2025 bracket schedule.
Tip income tax formula
Total wages = base wages + tip income
SS tax = min(total wages, $176,100) * 0.062
Medicare tax = total wages * 0.0145
FICA on tips = (SS on tips) + (Medicare on tips)
Federal income tax = progressive brackets on (total wages - standard deduction)
FICA applies to the combined base wages and tips up to the $176,100 Social Security wage base. Federal income tax is calculated using the 2025 bracket schedule after the standard deduction for the taxpayer's filing status.
Tip reporting rules
- Employees must report tips totaling $20 or more in a calendar month to their employer by the 10th of the following month.
- Employer-distributed tips (such as those from credit card payments distributed through payroll) are automatically included in W-2 income.
- Cash tips received directly from customers must be reported separately if they meet the monthly $20 threshold.
- Tips below the $20 monthly threshold do not need to be reported to the employer but are still taxable income that must be reported on your Form 1040.
- IRS Publication 1244 provides a tip record template that the IRS recommends employees maintain.
Tip income tax: frequently asked questions
Are tips subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes?
Yes. All tips are subject to FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare) just like regular wages. Employees must report cash tips to their employer monthly if the total exceeds $20 in a calendar month, using Form 4070 or a written statement.
How do I report tips on my tax return?
Tips reported to your employer are included on your W-2. Tips not reported to your employer (if under the $20 monthly threshold) must still be reported on line 1 of Form 1040. Unreported tips are also subject to FICA, which is calculated on Form 4137.
What is the allocated tips rule?
If an employee's reported tips are less than 8% of the employer's gross food and drink sales, the employer may allocate additional tip income to the employee. Allocated tips appear in Box 8 of the W-2 and may affect your tax return if your reported tips were low.
Can I take a credit for FICA taxes on tips?
Employers (not employees) can claim a credit equal to the FICA taxes paid on tip income that exceeds the federal minimum wage equivalent under Section 45B of the tax code. Employees do not receive a direct credit for FICA on tips.
Do I need to keep a tip log?
Yes. The IRS recommends keeping a daily tip log (or using IRS Publication 1244, the Employee's Daily Record of Tips). Good records make it easier to reconcile tips at year-end, defend your return if audited, and ensure accurate FICA withholding.
