Transfer Credit Value Calculator

This calculator quantifies the financial value of credits that transfer to a new institution or from AP/IB exams. Enter the cost per credit hour at your destination school and the number of credits that transfer or were earned through exams to see your total tuition savings versus retaking those courses.

Use full per-credit tuition, not per-course. Check your school's published tuition schedule.
AP exam fee 2024: approx. $98 per exam. Enter total for all exams taken.

Transfer credit value formula

Total credits transferred = Prior coursework credits + AP/IB exam credits
Remaining credits = Degree credits required - Total transferred
Tuition value of transfers = Total credits transferred x Cost per credit hour
AP/IB net savings = (AP/IB credits x Cost per credit hour) - Exam costs
No-transfer cost = Total degree credits x Cost per credit hour

Maximizing transfer credit value

  • Request a transfer credit evaluation before enrolling to know exactly which credits will be accepted and how they will apply.
  • Many states have statewide articulation agreements: in California, the ASSIST database (assist.org) shows how community college courses transfer to UC and CSU campuses.
  • AP scores of 3 or higher earn credit at most institutions; many selective colleges require 4 or 5. Check each institution's AP credit policy on their admissions website.
  • CLEP exams ($90 per exam in 2024) provide another route to earn college credit through examination at over 2,900 accredited institutions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the value of transfer credits?

Value of transfer credits = Number of transfer credits x Cost per credit hour at the receiving institution. If your destination school charges $500 per credit hour and you transfer in 30 credits, you save $15,000 in tuition versus retaking those courses.

Do AP exam credits save money?

Yes, substantially. The College Board AP exam fee is approximately $98 per exam (2024). If you earn a qualifying score and receive 3 college credits that would otherwise cost $500 per credit ($1,500), you save approximately $1,400 per exam passed. Savings scale with the cost per credit at your institution.

Are community college transfer credits always accepted?

Not automatically. Transferability depends on the articulation agreements between the sending and receiving institution, the course subject matter, and the grade earned. Many states have statewide articulation agreements that guarantee transfer of general education credits from community colleges to public 4-year institutions within that state.

What is the difference between elective credit and course equivalency?

Course equivalency means your transferred course satisfies a specific required course at the new institution. Elective credit means it counts toward your total hours but does not satisfy a specific requirement. Elective-only credit is less valuable because you may still need to take the specific required course.

How many credit hours can I typically transfer?

Limits vary by institution. Many 4-year colleges accept up to 60-70 semester credits from 2-year colleges, and up to 90 credits from other 4-year institutions. Policies differ, and some institutions limit the number of credits that can come from online-only institutions.
