Travel Rewards Value Calculator
Airline miles and hotel points have no fixed cash value; their worth depends on how you redeem them. A mile redeemed for a domestic economy seat might be worth 1 cent, while the same mile used for a business class international flight could be worth 3 to 5 cents. This calculator computes the value of your points based on two approaches: a specific redemption comparison (cash price vs points cost), and a portfolio value based on an assumed cents-per-point rate.
Specific redemption value
Portfolio value
Points value formula
Cents per point (cpp) = (Cash price / Points cost) x 100
Portfolio value ($) = Balance x Assumed cpp / 100
Worthwhile if: cpp of redemption >= target cpp threshold
The standard industry approach compares the cents-per-point value of a specific redemption against a personal threshold (often 1.0 to 1.5 cpp for economy travel, 2.0+ cpp for premium cabin travel). If the redemption exceeds your threshold, using points typically provides better value than paying cash.
Travel rewards value calculator: frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the value of airline miles or hotel points?
Point value (cents per point) = (Cash price of redemption / Points required) x 100. For example, if a flight costs $500 in cash or 50,000 miles, each mile is worth ($500 / 50,000) x 100 = 1.0 cent per mile. To find total portfolio value, multiply your points balance by the cents-per-point value.
What is a good cents-per-point value for airline miles?
Industry guidance (from US GAO reports and airline financial disclosures) generally values domestic economy award miles at 1.0 to 1.4 cents per mile. Business class international redemptions can yield 2.0 to 5.0 cents per mile. Cash-equivalent redemptions (statement credits or gift cards) typically return only 0.5 to 0.8 cents per mile, making them relatively poor value.
How do hotel points compare in value to airline miles?
Hotel points are typically worth 0.4 to 0.8 cents per point for major programmes such as Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and World of Hyatt. World of Hyatt points are generally considered the most valuable at 1.5 to 2.5 cents per point for premium redemptions. Always compare the points cost against the cash room rate to find the best value.
What is the breakeven cash price for using points?
Breakeven cash price = Points cost x Target cents-per-point value / 100. If you have a standard value of 1.5 cents per mile and an award costs 60,000 miles, the breakeven cash price is 60,000 x 1.5 / 100 = $900. If the cash ticket costs more than $900, using miles provides better value.
Do loyalty points expire?
Most airline and hotel loyalty programmes expire points after 12 to 24 months of account inactivity. Programmes such as Southwest Rapid Rewards do not expire points as long as the account remains active. Check your programme's terms and conditions directly with the airline or hotel chain for current expiry rules.
