How TV size recommendations are calculated

Both THX and SMPTE base their recommendations on the angle subtended by the screen at the viewer's eye. A larger angle means a more immersive picture; a smaller angle means less eye movement is required to scan the full frame.

Does 4K resolution change the minimum viewing distance?

What size TV should I get for a living room?

Measure the distance from your sofa to the TV wall in feet. Multiply that distance in inches by 0.835 (THX) to get the recommended diagonal. For a 10-foot (120-inch) viewing distance, that gives 120 x 0.835 = 100 inches, which is very large for most living rooms. A more practical approach for average living rooms of 8 to 12 feet is a 55-inch to 75-inch screen, which comfortably covers the SMPTE-recommended field of view while fitting standard TV stands and wall mounts.

Can a TV be too large for a room?

Yes. If the screen subtends more than about 40 to 50 degrees of horizontal field of view at your seating position, your eyes must move significantly to scan across the screen, which can cause fatigue. Very large screens in small rooms also show upscaling artefacts and compression noise more visibly. As a practical upper bound, limit screen size to 1.0 times the viewing distance in inches (diagonal) for standard content, or 1.2 times for high-quality 4K HDR content.
