Clean Vehicle Tax Credit Calculator

The federal new clean vehicle credit is worth up to $7,500, made of two $3,750 halves: one for the critical minerals requirement and one for the battery components requirement. To qualify, the vehicle's MSRP must be within the price cap for its type and your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) must be at or under the limit for your filing status. This calculator adds the halves your vehicle meets, then zeroes the credit if the MSRP or income caps are exceeded. Confirm eligibility on the official clean vehicle list.

Clean vehicle credit formula

Credit from battery rules = (minerals half * 3,750) + (battery half * 3,750)
Eligible = MSRP <= MSRP cap AND MAGI <= MAGI limit
Estimated credit = eligible ? credit from battery rules : 0
Net price after credit = MSRP - estimated credit

Each requirement met contributes $3,750. If either the price cap or the income limit is exceeded, the entire credit is disallowed.

Clean vehicle credit: frequently asked questions

How much is the new clean vehicle tax credit?

The new clean vehicle credit is worth up to $7,500, split into two halves of $3,750: one for meeting the critical minerals requirement and one for the battery components requirement. A vehicle can qualify for one half, both halves, or neither, depending on how it is built. The credit is claimed on Form 8936.

What income limit applies?

Your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) must be at or below the limit for your filing status: $300,000 married filing jointly, $225,000 head of household, or $150,000 for others. You can use your MAGI from the year you take delivery or the prior year, whichever is lower. If both exceed the limit, you do not qualify.

Is there a price cap on the vehicle?

Yes. The manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) must not exceed $80,000 for vans, SUVs, and pickup trucks, or $55,000 for other vehicles. If the MSRP is above the applicable cap, the vehicle does not qualify for the credit regardless of how the battery is sourced.

Can I get the credit at the dealer?

Since 2024, eligible buyers can transfer the credit to a registered dealer at the point of sale, effectively lowering the purchase price, rather than waiting to claim it on a tax return. You still must meet the income limit; if you exceed it, you may have to repay the transferred credit when you file.

Does this calculator confirm a specific vehicle qualifies?

No. Whether a given model meets the critical minerals and battery components requirements changes over time and by trim. Check the official fueleconomy.gov clean vehicle list and your vehicle's window sticker, then set the two requirement toggles in this calculator to match.
