Vacation Cost Calculator

Planning a trip without a cost estimate is the fastest path to overspending on vacation and struggling financially for months afterward. Whether you are planning a domestic road trip, a transatlantic flight, or a cruise, understanding the likely total cost before you book helps you save the right amount and avoid surprises. This calculator estimates trip cost across four major categories: flights (using average roundtrip prices as a starting point), accommodation, food, and activities and excursions. Average roundtrip domestic flights cost approximately $300 per person; international flights average $800 to $1,200 per person depending on destination and season. These are starting benchmarks, not guaranteed prices; actual fares vary widely by booking timing, airline, and route. Accommodation, food, and activity costs are entered directly based on your specific plans. The calculator outputs total cost, per-person cost, and a category breakdown to help you identify where to cut if the total exceeds your budget. Adjust the flight estimate to match actual fares you have found when booking.

How the vacation cost estimate works

The calculator adds four cost buckets: flights, accommodation, food, and activities. Flight cost is the per-person amount multiplied by the number of travelers. Accommodation is the nightly rate multiplied by the number of days. Food is the daily per-person amount multiplied by days and travelers. Activities are entered as a fixed total for the trip. The pre-filled flight amount changes when you switch destination type: road trips and cruises default to $0 for this field since flight cost is either absent or bundled separately. Adjust any field to match your actual quotes for a more precise budget.

Per-person cost divides the total by the number of travelers. This is useful for splitting costs among a group or comparing the per-person cost of different trip options. If you are traveling solo, the per-person cost equals the total.

Vacation budget: frequently asked questions

How accurate are the flight estimates?

They are national averages as starting points; actual prices depend on route, airline, booking timing, and season. A domestic flight can range from $150 to $600+ roundtrip. Always check current fares on the airline's own website or through flight comparison tools before finalising your budget.

What daily food budget should I use?

Budget travelers typically spend $30 to $50 per person per day; mid-range travelers spend $60 to $100; upscale dining averages $100 to $200 or more. This figure should include all meals, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages.

Should I include travel insurance?

Strongly recommended for international travel. Budget 4% to 8% of total trip cost for comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and lost baggage.

What about tipping and foreign transaction fees?

Budget an extra 5% to 15% as a buffer for tips, local transport, souvenirs, and incidental expenses not covered by your planned categories.

How can I reduce vacation costs?

Book flights 6 to 8 weeks in advance for domestic travel, 3 to 6 months for international; travel in shoulder season; compare accommodation options including vacation rentals for families, which often offer better value than hotel rooms when divided by occupants.
