Win Percentage Calculator
Win percentage, or winning percentage, is the simplest fair way to compare records: it expresses the share of games a team or player has won out of all games played, so two teams that have played different numbers of games can still be ranked sensibly. The basic calculation is wins divided by total games. Where ties are possible, the long-standing convention is to count each tie as half a win, so the formula becomes wins plus half of ties, all divided by total games. A win percentage of .500, or 50 percent, is an even split, anything above marks a winning record and anything below a losing one. North American leagues commonly publish the figure to three decimal places, such as .625, because that precision separates closely matched teams in the standings, and the same value can equally be read as a percentage. This calculator applies that standard convention exactly: enter wins, losses and any ties, and it returns the winning percentage as both a three-place decimal and a percent, along with the total games played. Every figure here is computed deterministically from the formula shown below, with a worked example that reconciles exactly to the calculator so you can follow each step.
Win percentage counts wins (plus half of any ties) over total games: win % = (wins + 0.5 x ties) / total games. A record of 50 wins and 30 losses gives a winning percentage of 62.50% (.625).
Win percentage formula
Win % = (W + 0.5 x T) / (W + L + T) x 100
W = wins, L = losses, T = ties
ties count as half a win
total games = W + L + T
Counting a tie as half a win keeps a drawn game neutral, neither helping nor hurting the record. With no ties, the formula reduces to wins divided by total games.
Worked example
A team has 50 wins, 30 losses and no ties.
- Total games: 50 + 30 + 0 = 80.
- Adjusted wins: 50 + (0.5 x 0) = 50.
- Winning percentage: 50 / 80 = 0.625.
- As a percentage: 0.625 x 100 = 62.50%.
The win percentage is 62.50% (.625). These are the calculator's default inputs, so the result above matches the widget exactly.
Win percentage calculator: frequently asked questions
What is win percentage?
Win percentage, also called winning percentage, is the share of games a team or player has won out of all games played. It lets you compare records fairly even when teams have played different numbers of games. A win percentage of .500, or 50 percent, means an even split of wins and losses.
How is win percentage calculated?
The basic formula is wins divided by total games, expressed as a percentage. When ties are possible, the common convention is to count each tie as half a win, so the formula becomes wins plus half of ties, divided by total games. This calculator uses that convention and lets you enter ties separately.
How are ties handled?
Ties are counted as half a win. So a record of 10 wins, 5 losses and 2 ties is treated as 10 plus 1, which is 11, over 17 total games. If a sport has no ties, leave the tie field at zero and the formula reduces to simple wins divided by total games.
Why is win percentage shown to three decimals?
Many leagues, especially in North American sport, publish winning percentage to three decimal places, such as .625, because it separates closely matched teams in the standings. This calculator shows three decimals to match that convention, and also expresses the same figure as a percentage.
What is the difference between win percentage and win rate?
They are the same idea expressed differently. Win percentage is usually written as a decimal to three places, such as .625, while win rate is the same value as a percentage, such as 62.5 percent. Both describe the proportion of games won out of games played.
