Work From Home Equipment Calculator
Setting up a productive home office requires upfront investment in equipment and ongoing monthly costs that are easy to underestimate. This work from home equipment calculator lets you enter one-time setup costs (laptop, monitor, desk, chair, webcam, headset, lighting, and accessories) and monthly running costs (internet, software subscriptions, electricity, and phone). The tool shows your total one-time setup cost, total monthly running cost, annual running cost, and the total first-year cost of working from home so you can budget accurately or negotiate reimbursement with your employer.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a home office setup cost?
A basic home office (laptop, monitor, desk, chair, headset) costs $800-1,500 to set up from scratch. A mid-range setup with a standing desk, dual monitors, ergonomic chair, ring light, and webcam runs $2,000-3,500. A premium professional setup (high-end monitor, ergonomic chair, sit-stand desk, quality microphone and camera) can cost $4,000-8,000. Ongoing costs include internet ($50-80 per month), electricity, and software subscriptions.
Can I deduct home office equipment on my taxes?
If you are self-employed or a freelancer, you can deduct home office equipment as a business expense on Schedule C. W-2 employees who work from home cannot deduct unreimbursed home office expenses under current tax law (this deduction was eliminated by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2018). Some employees may be able to negotiate reimbursement directly from their employer. Check IRS Publication 587 for the home office deduction rules.
Does my employer need to provide home office equipment?
There is no federal law requiring employers to provide home office equipment in the US. However, California, Illinois, and some other states have laws requiring employers to reimburse remote employees for reasonable work-related expenses, including equipment and internet costs. Many employers voluntarily provide equipment (especially laptops) or offer a stipend ($500-2,000 one-time, or $50-100 per month) for home office setup.
What internet speed do I need to work from home?
For a single remote worker with video calls, the FCC recommends at least 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload as a minimum for HD video conferencing. For frequent high-quality video calls and large file transfers, 100 Mbps or faster is more comfortable. If multiple people in the household are working or schooling from home simultaneously, 200-500 Mbps (or gigabit) is recommended.
What is the most important home office investment?
Ergonomic seating is often cited as the most impactful investment for remote workers who sit for long periods. A quality ergonomic chair ($300-1,000) can prevent back and neck problems that are costly to treat and reduce long-term productivity. The second most impactful investment for many workers is a large external monitor or dual monitors, which research suggests can increase productivity by 20-40% for knowledge workers.
