Why Alaska's floor moves on July 1, not January 1
Alaska is one of the few states that raises its wage floor in the middle of the year rather than on January 1. The current $14.00 an hour rate took effect on July 1, 2026, up from $13.00, under Ballot Measure 1, which voters approved in November 2024. The same measure locks in a further step to $15.00 on July 1, 2027, and only then hands the rate over to annual cost-of-living adjustments starting in 2028. For a full-time schedule, $14.00 an hour works out to roughly $560.00 a week and about $29,120.00 a year before tax, based on 2,080 hours.
The detail that trips up employers and workers alike is tips. Alaska does not permit a tip credit at all (Alaska Statute 23.10.065), so a server, bartender, or barista must receive the full $14.00 an hour in cash from the employer, with tips kept entirely on top. That places Alaska in a small group of states (including California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Montana) that reject the sub-minimum tipped wage used across most of the country.
Ballot Measure 1 bundled more than a pay increase: it also introduced paid sick leave and limits on mandatory employer meetings.
