How sales tax works in Louisiana
Louisiana charges a statewide base sales tax of 5%. Louisiana levies a 5% state sales tax (increased from 4.45% effective January 1, 2025). Each of Louisiana's 64 parishes imposes additional local sales taxes, and many cities add city taxes on top. Parish rates range from 0% (Cameron) to about 6% (Catahoula, Evangeline), giving combined rates that typically fall between 8% and 11%. Worked example
A $250.00 purchase in Orleans Parish, at the 10% combined rate (5% state + 5% local):
- Combined rate = 5% + 5% = 10%.

- Total = 250 + 25.00 = $275.00.

Are groceries exempt from Louisiana sales tax?
