How sales tax works in Minnesota
Minnesota charges a statewide base sales tax of 6.875%. Minnesota levies a 6.875% state sales tax. A number of cities and counties also impose local sales taxes, giving combined rates above 6.875% in those areas. The seven-county Twin Cities metro area (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington counties) adds a 0.75% metro transportation tax and a 0.25% metro housing tax effective October 1, 2023, for a metro base of at least 8.125%. Many outstate counties impose a 0.5% transit tax. Some cities add their own sales tax on top of county rates. Areas with no local tax pay only the 6.875% state rate. Worked example
