Bead Thread Length Calculator
The bead thread length calculator helps beaders, jewellery makers, and craft enthusiasts estimate the total thread or cord length needed for any beaded project. Whether you are stringing a simple necklace, doing peyote stitch with multiple thread passes, or knotting between each bead, the length of thread required grows quickly. Running out of thread mid-project is one of the most common frustrations in beading. This tool calculates thread length from bead diameter, bead count, thread passes, knot allowance, and finishing tails, giving you a total in both inches and metres.
Thread length formula
Thread per bead (mm) = (Bead diameter + Knot allowance) x Passes
Bead span (mm) = Thread per bead x Number of beads
Tail total (mm) = Tail length (in) x 25.4 x 2
Total thread (mm) = Bead span + Tail total
Frequently asked questions
How much beading thread do I need for a necklace?
For a single-strand necklace, estimate thread length as: (number of beads x bead diameter) + 12 to 18 inches for knotting, clasps, and finishing tails. For double or triple passes through beads (as in peyote or brick stitch), multiply accordingly. This calculator handles multiple passes automatically.
What is the working thread length for bead weaving?
In bead weaving (peyote, brick stitch, herringbone), a working thread length of 36 to 48 inches (90 to 120 cm) is common. Longer threads tangle more easily. Experienced beaders often work with shorter lengths and join threads as needed. The calculator gives total thread needed; divide by your preferred working length.
How do bead size and thread size relate?
Thread must fit through the bead hole at least twice (often 3 to 5 times in weaving stitches). Smaller bead holes require thinner thread. Size 15 seed beads typically need size D or thinner thread. Size 8 or 6 seed beads can take heavier thread or Fireline. Always test thread fit before starting a project.
What is the difference between beading thread and beading cord?
Beading thread (nylon, silk, Fireline) is thin and flexible, used with beading needles for woven or strung beadwork. Beading cord (elastic, leather, nylon cord) is thicker, often used for strung bracelets and necklaces without needles. The thread length formula is the same for both.
Should I add extra thread for knotting between beads?
If you are knotting between each bead (as in pearl knotting), you need approximately 1 to 2 inches of extra thread per bead for the knot. Add this to the bead diameter to get the spacing per bead, or use the knot allowance field in this calculator.
