How much honey does one frame produce?
A fully capped deep frame holds approximately 8 to 9 pounds (3.6 to 4 kg) of honey. A medium (Illinois) frame holds approximately 5 to 6 pounds. A shallow frame holds 3 to 4 pounds. The actual weight depends on frame size, capping completeness, and moisture content of the honey.
How many frames of honey should I leave for the bees?
A standard 10-frame Langstroth hive needs 60 to 80 pounds (27 to 36 kg) of honey stored for winter survival in northern climates. This equates to approximately 8 to 10 deep frames, or 2 full deep supers. Leave these frames and harvest only the surplus above that amount.
What is the average honey production per hive per year?
USDA NASS (National Agricultural Statistics Service) data shows the US average is approximately 50 to 60 pounds of honey per colony per year. Productive hives in strong nectar flows can produce 100 to 200 pounds. First-year hives rarely produce surplus honey.
How do I calculate total honey yield?
Multiply the number of harvestable honey frames by the average weight per frame. For example, 20 deep frames at 8.5 lb each = 170 lb gross honey. After accounting for uncapped or partially capped frames, actual yield may be 150 to 160 lb.
What moisture content should honey be before harvesting?
Honey should be below 18.6 percent moisture content to prevent fermentation. The USDA honey grading standards (USDA Honey Standards, 7 CFR 52.1391 to 52.1406) specify moisture of 20 percent or less for US Grade A honey. Use a refractometer to check moisture before extraction.
