Chicken Coop Size Calculator

Overcrowded chickens are stressed, more prone to disease, and more likely to peck each other. Giving your flock adequate space is one of the most important decisions in backyard poultry keeping. This calculator uses the standard minimum space recommendations of 4 square feet of indoor coop space per standard-size bird and 10 square feet of outdoor run space per bird, consistent with USDA extension poultry guides. It also calculates the recommended number of nesting boxes (1 per 3 to 4 hens). Enter your number of birds to get the minimum dimensions for your coop and run.

Chicken coop size formula

Coop area (sq ft) = Number of birds x Coop rate (sq ft/bird)
Run area (sq ft) = Number of birds x Run rate (sq ft/bird)
Nesting boxes = ceil(Number of birds / 3)

Minimum coop rate: 4 sq ft per standard-size bird. Minimum run rate: 10 sq ft per bird. One nesting box per 3 to 4 hens.

Space planning tips

  • Build larger than the minimum: chickens do better with more room, and you will likely want to expand your flock later.
  • Allow 8 to 10 inches of roost bar per bird at a height of 18 to 24 inches above the floor.
  • Ventilation: provide 1 sq ft of vent area per bird for fresh air exchange without drafts.
  • Predator protection: bury hardware cloth 12 to 18 inches below ground around the run perimeter.
  • In cold climates, smaller coops retain body heat better. In hot climates, maximize shade and ventilation over insulation.

Chicken coop calculator: frequently asked questions

How much space does each chicken need in a coop?

The commonly cited standard from USDA extension guides and poultry production references is a minimum of 4 square feet of floor space per bird inside the coop, and 10 square feet per bird in the outdoor run. More space reduces stress, pecking, and disease transmission.

Does the breed affect how much space is needed?

Yes. Large breeds (Jersey Giants, Brahmas) need more space; bantam breeds need less. The 4 sq ft figure is a minimum for standard-size laying hens. If you keep larger breeds, use 5 to 6 sq ft per bird in the coop. If birds are confined due to weather, the more space the better.

What is the minimum run size for backyard chickens?

A minimum of 10 sq ft per bird in an outdoor run is the standard recommendation. Free-ranging birds need at least 250 sq ft per bird to forage effectively. Confined run birds need enrichment such as dust baths, perches, and foraging areas.

Does flock size affect coop ventilation needs?

Yes. Each bird needs at least 1 square foot of ventilation area (windows and vents combined) for fresh air exchange and moisture control. Ammonia from droppings accumulates quickly in an undersized or poorly ventilated coop, causing respiratory disease.

How many nesting boxes per hen?

One nesting box per 3 to 4 hens is the standard recommendation. Nesting boxes are typically 12 x 12 inches. Hens are communal and prefer to share boxes, so fewer boxes than the total hen count is normal.
