Cake Serving Size Calculator

Planning how many servings a cake will yield is essential for events and parties. The number of servings depends on the cake's shape and dimensions, how many layers it has, and the size of the slice. Round cakes are typically cut into wedge or rectangular party portions. Sheet cakes are cut into rectangular pieces. This calculator computes the total surface area of the cake, divides by the area of a single serving slice, and returns the estimated number of servings. Select your cake shape and enter the dimensions, then specify your desired serving width and depth to get the serving count for any occasion.

Serving size formula

Round cake area = PI * (diameter / 2)^2
Rectangular cake area = length * width
Serving area = slice width * slice depth
Servings = cake area / serving area

For round cakes, "slice depth" is the radius direction (half the diameter). For sheet cakes, depth is the shorter cut dimension.

Common cake size and serving reference

  • 6-inch round (party): approximately 12 servings
  • 8-inch round (party): approximately 20 servings
  • 9-inch round (party): approximately 24 servings
  • 10-inch round (party): approximately 30 servings
  • 9x13 sheet (standard): approximately 20 servings
  • 11x15 sheet (standard): approximately 35 servings

Cake servings: frequently asked questions

How many servings does a 9-inch round cake yield?

A standard 9-inch round 2-layer cake cut into 1x2 inch party slices yields about 24 servings. Cut into larger 1.5x2 inch slices, it yields about 16 servings. Wedding cakes use smaller 1x2 inch slices.

What is a standard cake serving size?

A standard dessert serving for a round layer cake is approximately 1 inch wide by 2 inches deep (the slice width by the pan radius). For a sheet cake, a standard serving is 2x3 inches. Party servings may be slightly smaller.

How do I cut a round cake for the most servings?

The Wilton method cuts concentric circles: cut the outer circle 2 inches from the edge, slice that ring into 1-inch pieces, then cut the inner circle. This method produces more uniform pieces than the traditional pie-wedge method.

How many people does a 9x13 sheet cake serve?

A 9x13 single-layer sheet cake cut into 3x2 inch pieces yields about 20 servings. Cut into 2x2 inch pieces it yields about 29 servings. This assumes a standard 2-inch tall cake.

How much extra cake should I make as a buffer?

Plan for 10-15% extra servings to account for uneven cutting, guest second servings, and the ends of the cake. For weddings, add 15-20% since precise cutting is harder under pressure.
