Frosting Coverage Calculator

Running out of frosting mid-cake is one of the most frustrating baking problems. This calculator estimates the total frosting quantity you need based on your cake's size, shape, number of layers, and desired coating thickness. It calculates the surface area of the top, sides, and inter-layer filling zones, then applies a standard frosting thickness to estimate total volume. For round cakes, the side surface area is the circumference times height. For rectangular cakes, it is the perimeter times height. Enter your cake dimensions and get the frosting quantity in both cups and grams for any frosting type.

Frosting coverage formula

Round cake side area = PI * diameter * height
Round cake top area = PI * (diameter/2)^2
Rectangular cake side area = 2 * (length + width) * height
Filling area = top area * (layers - 1)
Total area = top + sides + filling area
Volume (cu in) = total area * frosting thickness
Cups = volume / 14.4 (cu in per cup)

Frosting tips

  • Apply a thin crumb coat first, refrigerate for 15-30 minutes, then apply the final coat for cleaner results.
  • Room temperature butter is essential for buttercream. Cold butter will not cream properly.
  • Always make slightly more frosting than calculated to account for imperfect spreading and finishing.
  • Leftover frosting freezes well for up to 3 months in an airtight container.

Frosting coverage: frequently asked questions

How much frosting do I need for a 9-inch two-layer cake?

A 9-inch two-layer cake needs approximately 3-4 cups (600-800 g) of frosting for a generous coating including filling between the layers. This covers the crumb coat, filling, and outer coat. For a thinner coat, 2.5 cups may suffice.

How much frosting do I need per serving?

A standard serving of frosting is about 2-3 tablespoons (30-45 g). A heavily frosted cupcake uses about 3-4 tablespoons (45-60 g). The amount varies significantly with application style.

What is a crumb coat and does it change the frosting amount?

A crumb coat is a thin first layer of frosting that traps crumbs and creates a clean base for the final coat. It adds approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of the final coat amount to your total frosting requirement.

How do I convert frosting cups to grams?

Buttercream frosting weighs approximately 170-200 g per cup (it is denser than water due to powdered sugar). Cream cheese frosting is slightly denser at about 200-220 g per cup. Whipped cream frosting is lighter at about 120-140 g per cup.

Does cake shape affect how much frosting I need?

Yes. A square cake has more surface area than a round cake of the same diameter, requiring about 25% more frosting. A bundt cake or loaf pan has different geometry. This calculator accounts for round and rectangular cakes.
