Coffee spending formula

Daily spend = Cost per cup * Cups per day
Yearly spend = Daily spend * Days per year
Annual savings = (Cafe cost - Home cost) * Cups per day * Days per year

Example: $5.00/cup, 2 cups/day, 365 days. Daily = $10.00. Yearly = $3,650. At $0.50/cup at home, yearly home cost = $365. Annual savings = $3,285.

Coffee budget context

  • The BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey includes coffee and other beverages in the "food away from home" category, which averaged over $3,500 per household in recent years.
  • Coffee at home is one of the lowest-cost per-serving hot beverages. Ground coffee beans cost roughly $10 to $20 per lb, yielding about 40 to 80 cups.
  • Subscription coffee services can reduce per-cup cost versus single retail purchases while offering variety.
  • The CFPB budget recommendation is to keep total discretionary spending (including coffee) within your budget after covering essentials and savings goals.
