Tip and Bill Split Calculator

Splitting a restaurant check fairly is one of the most common everyday math tasks. This calculator takes your bill subtotal, your chosen tip percentage, and the number of people at the table and instantly shows the total bill with tip and each person's equal share. The formula is straightforward: total with tip equals the bill multiplied by (1 plus the tip rate), and each person owes that total divided by the number of diners. Use it for restaurant meals, food delivery, bar tabs, or any shared expense where you want to add a gratuity and divide equally.

Tip and split formula

Tip amount = Bill * (tip% / 100)
Total = Bill + Tip amount
Per person = Total / Number of people

Equivalently: Per person = Bill * (1 + tip%/100) / people. For a $85 bill at 18% split among 4, the tip is $15.30, the total is $100.30, and each person pays $25.08.

US tipping guide

  • Full-service restaurants: 15% to 20% is standard; 20% to 25% for excellent service.
  • Food delivery: 10% to 15% minimum, more for large or complex orders.
  • Bartenders: $1 to $2 per drink or 15% to 20% of the tab.
  • Buffets and counter service: 10% is common if service staff are present.
  • Hotel housekeeping: $2 to $5 per night, left daily.

Tip and bill split: frequently asked questions

How is the tip and split calculated?

The total with tip equals the bill multiplied by (1 plus the tip rate as a decimal). Each person's share is that total divided by the number of people. For example, a $100 bill with 18% tip split 4 ways is $118 / 4 = $29.50 per person.

Should tip be calculated before or after tax?

In the US, tipping customs vary. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the total including tax. This calculator lets you enter whatever subtotal you choose, so you can tip on either amount by entering the appropriate figure.

What is a standard tip percentage in the US?

The commonly cited range for restaurant service in the US is 15% to 20%, with 18% being a frequent default. For exceptional service, 20% to 25% is common. For counter service or delivery, 10% to 15% is typical.

Can I round each person's share up to the nearest dollar?

This calculator shows the exact mathematical share. To round up, simply apply your own rounding after reading the result. Rounding each person's share up by a few cents is a common practice that avoids awkward coin change.

What if some people ordered more than others?

This calculator assumes an equal split. If people ordered different amounts, calculate the tip on the full bill, then divide just the tip total equally and add each person's food cost to their share of the tip.
