Compassion Fatigue Score Calculator
Compassion fatigue is the emotional and physical exhaustion that results from absorbing the trauma and suffering of others in caregiving roles. The Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL), developed by Beth Hudnall Stamm and widely used in health and social work research, measures three dimensions: compassion satisfaction (positive feelings from helping), burnout (general work-related exhaustion), and secondary traumatic stress (trauma absorbed from others). This calculator is inspired by the ProQOL framework. Rate each statement from 1 (Never) to 5 (Very often). This is a screening tool only, not a clinical instrument.
Screening tool only. For caregivers and helping professionals. Not a clinical diagnosis. Seek professional support if experiencing significant distress.

Compassion fatigue score formula
CS Score = (CS1 + CS2) / 10 * 100
Burnout Score = (BO1 + BO2 + BO3) / 15 * 100
STS Score = (STS1 + STS2 + STS3) / 15 * 100
CF Risk = Burnout * 0.50 + STS * 0.50
(Compassion Satisfaction acts as a protective factor; reviewed separately)
Burnout and secondary traumatic stress are equally weighted at 50% each in the overall compassion fatigue risk score, consistent with the ProQOL's presentation of these as two distinct pathways to caregiver harm. Compassion satisfaction is displayed separately as a protective factor.
Understanding your scores
- Compassion Satisfaction above 70: Strong protective factor. Continue and nurture what gives you meaning in this work.
- Burnout or STS above 55: Elevated risk. Consider professional supervision, peer support and structured self-care.
- CF Risk above 65: High compassion fatigue risk. Seek organizational support and professional consultation promptly.
Compassion fatigue calculator: frequently asked questions
What is compassion fatigue?
Compassion fatigue is a state of exhaustion and reduced ability to empathize resulting from repeated exposure to others' suffering. It commonly affects healthcare workers, social workers, therapists, emergency responders and family caregivers. The Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) scale, developed by Beth Hudnall Stamm, is the most widely used research instrument for measuring compassion fatigue and its counterpart, compassion satisfaction.
What is the difference between compassion fatigue and burnout?
Burnout develops from cumulative workplace stress (workload, organizational factors). Compassion fatigue specifically stems from the emotional cost of caring for others who are suffering. It includes secondary traumatic stress (indirect trauma exposure) and may develop rapidly after a single traumatic event involving a patient or care recipient, whereas burnout accumulates gradually.
Who is at risk of compassion fatigue?
Those at highest risk include nurses, physicians, social workers, therapists, emergency services personnel, hospice workers, and family caregivers. Research published in the journal Traumatology and cited by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs indicates that 40-85% of helping professionals will develop compassion fatigue at some point in their careers.
What is compassion satisfaction?
Compassion satisfaction is the positive fulfillment derived from helping others effectively. It acts as a protective factor against compassion fatigue. High compassion satisfaction is associated with lower burnout and secondary traumatic stress. The ProQOL scale measures both simultaneously to give a complete picture of caregiver wellbeing.
How can compassion fatigue be treated or prevented?
Evidence-based interventions include regular clinical supervision or peer support, structured self-care plans, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), clear professional role boundaries, adequate rest and recovery, meaning-making practices, and organizational support programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Employee Education System offers compassion fatigue resilience training programs.
