Lexile to Grade Level Calculator

A Lexile measure is a numeric reading score, such as 850L, from the Lexile Framework for Reading. This tool takes a reader's Lexile measure and reports the typical US grade band it falls within, the nearest grade, and the recommended targeted reading range for choosing books. There is no official one-to-one Lexile-to-grade conversion because abilities vary widely inside any grade, so the result is a reference guide rather than a placement decision. Enter a reader measure to see the matching band and the comfortable book range around it.

Lexile range and band logic

Range floor = reader measure - range below
Range ceiling = reader measure + range above
Grade band = the published Lexile band containing the reader measure
Nearest grade = the grade whose band midpoint is closest to the measure

The targeted reading range is the window of text difficulty recommended for a reader: roughly 100L below to 50L above the reader measure. Both offsets are editable so you can match your school's guidance.

Reading the result

  • Lexile measures and grade bands vary by edition and by state adoption; confirm the bands your school uses.
  • Measures below 0L are reported as Beginning Reader (BR) codes for early readers.
  • A reader near the top of a band may be ready for texts in the next band up.
  • Use the range floor and ceiling to filter a library or catalog search for suitable books.
  • A Lexile measure describes one dimension of reading; interest and background knowledge also matter.

Lexile to grade level: frequently asked questions

What is a Lexile measure?

A Lexile measure is a number followed by an L (for example 850L) produced by the Lexile Framework for Reading. A reader measure describes a person's reading ability and a text measure describes a book's difficulty. Matching a reader to text within a sensible range supports comprehension and growth.

How does a Lexile number map to a grade level?

There is no single official conversion because students within any grade span a wide range of abilities. This calculator uses published Lexile grade bands as a reference and reports the band your measure falls into, plus the nearest grade. Always treat the result as a guide, not a placement.

What is a good Lexile range for choosing a book?

The Lexile Framework recommends a targeted reading range of roughly 100L below to 50L above a reader's measure. Books in that window are challenging enough to build skill without being so hard they discourage the reader. This calculator computes that window for you.

Can a Lexile measure be negative or above 1,000?

Yes. Beginning readers can have measures below 0L, reported as BR (Beginning Reader) codes. Advanced texts and readers can exceed 1,400L. This calculator accepts any numeric value and reports the matching band.

Is the Lexile Framework the official source?

The Lexile Framework for Reading is developed by MetaMetrics and is widely used by US state education agencies. Grade bands and ranges vary by edition and by state adoption, so confirm the specific bands your school or state uses before making decisions.
