Reading Speed Calculator
Knowing your reading speed in words per minute (wpm) helps you plan study sessions, estimate how long a book will take, and track improvement over time. This calculator works two ways: you can enter the total word count and the time taken to read it, or you can enter the number of pages (using 250 words per page as the standard estimate). The tool then converts your figures to a words-per-minute reading speed and classifies your result as slow (under 200 wpm), average (200-300 wpm), fast (300-400 wpm), or very fast (over 400 wpm). It also shows how long it would take you to read a standard novel of 80,000 words at your calculated speed. Time should be entered in minutes. If you read for longer, convert hours to minutes first (for example, 1 hour 30 minutes equals 90 minutes).
Reading speed classification
| Level | Speed (wpm) | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Slow | Under 200 wpm | Below average; may benefit from reading practice |
| Average | 200-300 wpm | Typical adult reading speed with good comprehension |
| Fast | 300-400 wpm | Above average; common for avid readers |
| Very fast | Over 400 wpm | Speed reader range; comprehension may vary |
Formula
Reading speed (wpm) = total words / time in minutes
Novel reading time (hours) = 80,000 / reading speed / 60
Reading speed: frequently asked questions
What is the average adult reading speed?
The average adult reading speed for non-fiction prose is approximately 200 to 300 words per minute (wpm). College students average around 300 wpm with about 70% comprehension. Academic research puts the average silent reading speed at 238 wpm for adults. Speed reading techniques can push speeds above 1,000 wpm, but comprehension typically decreases significantly above 500 wpm.
How many words are on a typical book page?
A standard printed book page contains approximately 250 to 300 words, with 250 words per page being a common industry estimate. This varies by font size, line spacing, and trim size. Mass market paperbacks tend toward the higher end (280-300 words per page), while large-format books with wider margins may average closer to 200 words per page. This calculator uses 250 words per page as the default.
What reading speed is considered fast?
Reading speeds are generally classified as: slow (under 200 wpm), average (200-300 wpm), fast (300-400 wpm), and very fast (over 400 wpm). Speed readers trained with techniques such as chunking, skimming, and reduced subvocalization may reach 600-1,000 wpm. However, research suggests comprehension drops significantly above 400 wpm for most readers.
How long does it take to read a novel?
A standard novel of 80,000 words takes approximately 4.4 hours at 300 wpm or 6.7 hours at 200 wpm. Short novels (40,000 words) take about 2.2 hours at 300 wpm. Epic novels like War and Peace (580,000 words) take over 32 hours at 300 wpm. Most avid readers finish a typical novel in 4 to 8 hours of reading time spread over several sessions.
Does reading speed affect comprehension?
Yes. Comprehension and reading speed are inversely related above a certain threshold. Reading too slowly (under 100 wpm) can actually reduce comprehension because working memory loses context between words. The sweet spot for most readers is 200-400 wpm, where comprehension remains high. Above 500 wpm, most people experience a significant drop in retention and understanding.
