Character Count Calculator

Every major social media platform imposes character limits on posts, and knowing exactly where you stand prevents truncated captions, rejected copy, and embarrassing cut-off sentences. This character count calculator displays real-time character totals and shows characters remaining for four major platforms: Twitter (X) at 280 characters, LinkedIn posts at 3,000 characters, Instagram captions at 2,200 characters, and Facebook (Meta) posts at 63,206 characters. The remaining count turns red when you exceed the platform limit, giving you instant visual feedback. The tool also shows total characters with spaces and without spaces, and total word count. All counting happens in your browser instantly as you type. Paste your draft social media post into the text area below and check all four limits simultaneously before publishing.

Character count: frequently asked questions

How many characters does Twitter allow?

Twitter (now X) allows 280 characters per post for standard accounts. This limit was doubled from the original 140 characters in November 2017. URLs are always counted as 23 characters regardless of length. Replies, quote tweets, and direct messages also follow the 280-character limit. X Premium (Blue) subscribers may post longer content.

How many characters does LinkedIn allow for posts?

LinkedIn allows up to 3,000 characters for standard posts. Article titles allow up to 220 characters. Connection request messages are limited to 300 characters. InMail subject lines allow 200 characters and message bodies allow 1,900 characters. Company page posts also follow the 3,000-character limit.

How many characters does Instagram allow for captions?

Instagram allows up to 2,200 characters for photo and video captions. However, captions are truncated after approximately 125 characters in the feed view, with a 'more' link to expand. Stories have no caption field. Reel descriptions also follow the 2,200-character limit. Hashtags count toward the character total.

What is the Meta (Facebook) character limit?

Facebook (Meta) allows up to 63,206 characters for standard posts and status updates. In practice, posts longer than a few hundred words are truncated in the feed with a 'See more' link. Ad copy has much tighter limits: headline 40 characters, primary text 125 characters recommended, and description 30 characters for optimal display.

Does this counter count spaces and punctuation?

Yes. Total character count includes spaces, punctuation, emojis, and all other characters. Most social media platforms count every character including spaces. The 'characters without spaces' figure is provided for reference, as some academic and editorial contexts exclude spaces from character counts.
