Word count calculator: frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is calculated by dividing the total word count by 200, which is the commonly accepted average adult reading speed in words per minute (wpm). Silent reading speeds vary widely: slower readers average around 100-150 wpm, average readers 200-300 wpm, and fast readers 300-500 wpm. The 200 wpm figure is a conservative estimate suitable for dense or technical text.

How are sentences counted?

Sentences are counted by detecting sentence-ending punctuation: full stops (.), question marks (?), and exclamation marks (!). Abbreviations and decimal numbers can cause slight over-counting, but the estimate is accurate for standard prose. Dialogue and nested punctuation are treated as sentence boundaries at each mark.

How are paragraphs counted?

Paragraphs are counted by detecting blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines (double line breaks). A single block of text with no blank lines is counted as one paragraph. Empty trailing lines are ignored.

What is the difference between character count with and without spaces?

Character count with spaces includes every character including spaces, tabs, and newlines. Character count without spaces excludes all whitespace characters. The count without spaces is often used to check word length limits for filing systems, SEO metadata, or social media platforms that count characters but not spaces.

What word count is recommended for blog posts and articles?

SEO guidance varies, but most recommendations suggest 1,500 to 2,500 words for a well-ranked blog post. Long-form pillar content typically runs 3,000 to 5,000 words. Short news articles are usually 300 to 600 words. Academic essays and research papers follow the word counts specified by the institution or journal.
