Next Birthday Countdown Calculator
Want to know how many days until your next birthday or a friend's? This calculator finds the next occurrence of any birthday date and counts the exact number of calendar days remaining from today. It accounts for whether the birthday has already occurred this year (in which case it counts to next year), and handles the leap year edge case for February 29 birthdays. The countdown uses your browser's local date so it reflects your time zone.
How the birthday countdown is calculated
Next birthday = this year's birthday if not yet passed, else next year's birthday
Days remaining = Next birthday date - Today's date
The calculator sets the target date to the birthday month and day in the current year. If that date has already passed, it advances the year by one. It then subtracts today's date (at midnight) to get the number of whole days remaining.
Birthday planning tips
- Allow at least 2 weeks for mailing a card via USPS First Class Mail to ensure on-time delivery.
- For surprise parties, 4 to 6 weeks lead time is typical for coordinating guests and venues.
- Many online retailers offer birthday reminders linked to your contacts list.
- Milestone birthdays (30, 40, 50, etc.) often warrant more planning than typical celebrations.
Birthday countdown: frequently asked questions
How does the birthday countdown work?
The calculator finds the next occurrence of your birthday month and day in the current or next calendar year, then subtracts today's date to get the number of days remaining. If your birthday has already passed this year, it counts to next year's date.
What happens if today is my birthday?
If today is your birthday, the calculator shows 0 days remaining and a congratulatory message. Your next birthday will be 365 or 366 days away (depending on whether a leap year falls in between).
How are leap year birthdays (February 29) handled?
If your birthday is February 29, the calculator counts to the next February 29, which occurs every 4 years. In non-leap years, it counts to March 1 as the nearest equivalent date.
Does the calculator use my local time zone?
Yes. The calculator uses your browser's local date, so midnight in your time zone is when the day changes and the countdown decrements.
Can I use this to count down to someone else's birthday?
Yes. Simply enter the other person's birthday date. The calculator counts days to their next birthday occurrence from today's date.
