Points Percentage Calculator

Points percentage is the standard way to compare hockey teams that have played different numbers of games. In leagues that award two points for a win, a team can earn at most two points per game, so the maximum points available equals two times games played. Points percentage is the team's actual points divided by that maximum, giving the share of available points earned. It is especially useful mid-season or when schedules are uneven, because raw point totals favor teams that have simply played more games. This calculator divides standings points by two times games played and returns the points percentage. Enter 90 points in 82 games and the tool returns about 0.549, or 54.88 percent. A points percentage of .500 means a team has earned exactly half the available points, while figures above .600 typically indicate a strong playoff contender. Because the inputs come straight from the standings and the maximum is fixed at two points per game, the calculation is fully deterministic, and you can change the points or games played to see how each result shifts a team's pace. The complete formula and a worked example that reconciles exactly to the calculator above appear in full below for you to follow.

Points percentage is points earned divided by points available: P% = points / (2 x games). A team with 90 points in 82 games has a points percentage of about 0.549 (54.88%).

Points percentage formula

points percentage = points / (2 x games played)
points = standings points earned
2 x games played = maximum points available

Each game offers a maximum of two points, so the available points equal two times games played. Dividing actual points by that maximum gives the share earned, expressed as a decimal or a percentage.

Worked example

A team with 90 standings points after 82 games played.

  1. Points available = 2 x 82 = 164
  2. Points percentage = 90 / 164
  3. = 0.5488
  4. As a percentage = 54.88%

These are the calculator's default inputs, so the result above matches the widget exactly.

Points Percentage Calculator: frequently asked questions

What is points percentage in hockey?

Points percentage is a team's standings points divided by the maximum points available, which is two times games played. It lets teams that have played different numbers of games be compared fairly during a season.

Why use points percentage instead of total points?

Total points favor teams that have simply played more games. Points percentage normalizes for schedule, so it is the better comparison when teams are at different points in the season or schedules are uneven.

What does a .500 points percentage mean?

It means the team has earned exactly half of the points available to it. Above .500 is an above-average pace, and figures above .600 generally indicate a strong contender over a full season.

Does this handle overtime and shootout points?

It uses whatever standings points you enter, so it already reflects any overtime or shootout points your league awards, as long as the maximum stays at two points per game. Enter the standings total directly.

Is the maximum always two points per game?

In the most common hockey scoring system, yes: a win is worth two points. Some competitions use three-point games for regulation wins, in which case the available-points denominator would differ and this simple version would not apply.
